Your Model 57 Wellsaw didn’t just happen. It’s the result of a development that began in 1949 with Model 49A. That saw had a 1/4 HP drive, a cutting capacity of 3 1/2″ x 6″ flat and 3″ round and a 1/2″ blade which made it a pretty good unit for those days. Model 49A was in constant production until 1962. People who knew a good tool when they found one bought almost three thousand. The next development in the series was Model 300. It featured a sturdier saw frame which had been adapted from one of Wellsaw’s mitering saws. It’s capacity and general configuration was the same as Model 49A but its drive was increased to 1/3 HP. That proved to be even more popular than the older 49A. More than 6500 were built in fifteen years.
The first of today’s Model 57’s came off the line in 1978 and, as you can see from the specifications; it’s heavier, more powerful and has a considerably greater cutting capacity. With a 1/2 HP drive, Model 57 cuts 5″ x 7″ flats and 5″ rounds and features other refinements such as a ground bed for more precise cutting.
The best measure of the value of this series is the fact that 11,646 have been produced between 1949 and 1991 as this is written – and it’s still going strong.
